The Name Game

So the search for a name has started in earnest. Knowing we have a boy on the way adds a certain set of responsibilities to the process. You have to be careful to not pick a name that’s going to result in years of childhood torment or playground ass-kickings. Then you have to take in to account how a name works on a grown man. He’s going to have this name for the rest of his life, and something that sounds cute on a kid might not work at age 30. Finally, there’s the “unique” factor to consider: Everyone that knows me is aware that I have an unusual name, and I have a bit of a love/hate affair with that sometimes. So that means a name that’s not too unique, yet not too common. Oy!

To help move things along, The Pregnant One and I spent a portion of Saturday afternoon at Borders reading through baby name books. Once we hit the point of sore rear-ends from sitting on wooden stools we gave in and bought The Baby Name Wizard, which was written by the woman behind this nifty little baby-name tool. We spent a lazy, rainy Sunday afternoon bouncing names off each other, making a list, saying names out loud, asking our little belly dweller what he thought, and finally playing a round of baby name death-match. Two names enter, one name leaves! After narrowing things down a bit, we threw a bunch more names onto the list just to make thing interesting.

We’ll pick a name soon. Honest.

On a side note, I felt the baby move again last night. I’ve been amazed with how fast things transition during pregnancy. I can actually feel him getting stronger just over the course of a few days. Pretty wild.

Coming later today if I get motivated: Fun with music. Coming soon-ish when I have the time: PUPPP’s. And not the cute fuzzy kind.
